Welcome to the new Grozone News Page!
Since our new website went live just over a week ago, we've had some fantastic events and met some wonderful new people.
On Saturday 5th April we had many of our long-standing regular volunteers along to help with some tree pruning and logging. We also sorted out our vast stock of plant pots into some kind of size order in some new, specially built storage bays.
On Monday 7th we had a visit from a family who live nearby to do some pond dipping. Later, we repaired some bowsaws and hedging shears and took shelter from the rain...!
Tuesday 8th saw the very first of our new monthly programme of environmental arts workshops: we tried out some willow construction skills and created a bird bath holder and willow archway. At the end of the day we had a delivery of pallets, courtesy of Pete Cowley and Duerrs Jam, Wythenshawe. These will soon be transformed into new compost bins.
On Wednesday 9th we had our usual food growing and composting day, with lots of weeding and ground preparation work going on. During the afternoon We also held our monthly Friends of Grozone meeting where we discussed the latest happenings and plans for the future, along with how we want to run cooking sessions as part of our regular activities and whether we can get any external funding that will help us achieve more. Members of the Walker family brought along a cake they had made containing a mystery ingredient that we all had to guess at...we needed telling in the end that it contained chickpeas!!

Thursday 10th was a day for wildlife gardening, with Fiona leading sessions on building homes for frogs and toads and planting out some primroses, foxgloves and forget-me-nots.
Friday 11th was the first of our 'Outdoor Cooking with Fresh Seasonal Produce' sessions... Fresh from the garden were leeks and swiss chard. And with a quick internet search for tasty recipes which included these, we found the recipe for Penne with leeks and swiss chard in a walnut and cream sauce. Pete went off for walnuts and cream while the fire was lit and the dutch ovens prepared...an hour or two later we all tucked in to a a really tasty meal. If you want to try it for yourselves have a look here.

On Saturday 12th Peter, Clarence and Cynthia installed new frames and foundation in one of the beehives, to provide what Peter describes as 'penthouse accomodation' for our bees! Making sure, we hope, that they won't want to go and live anywhere else! Fiona worked with the rest of the group to harvest the remaining leeks and plant out the last of the seed potatoes.
